Deadly Attack in Pahalgam Raises Alarm
On April 22, a brutal terrorist attack in the Pahalgam region of Indian-administered Kashmir claimed the lives of 26 individuals, most of them tourists. The incident marks one of the deadliest attacks in the region since 2000.
India has suggested cross-border links to the attack but has yet to present concrete evidence. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s civilian and military leadership have rejected any involvement and called for a neutral international investigation.
JD Vance: “Hope India Responds Without Escalation”
U.S. Vice President JD Vance addressed the issue during an interview on Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier.
“Our hope here is that India responds to this terrorist attack in a way that doesn’t lead to a broader regional conflict,” said Vance.
“And we hope, frankly, that Pakistan, to the extent that they’re responsible, cooperates with India to make sure that the terrorists sometimes operating in their territory are hunted down and dealt with.”
Washington’s Response: Strong Condemnation, Cautious Diplomacy
President Donald Trump and senior U.S. officials have condemned the attack, describing it as “terror” and “unconscionable,” while refraining from directly blaming Pakistan.
India remains a strategic partner for the U.S., particularly in its efforts to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific. Pakistan, once a key U.S. ally during operations in Afghanistan, now holds a reduced strategic role post-2021.
U.S. Calls for Dialogue Between Nuclear Neighbours
Amid fears of escalation, the U.S. State Department confirmed ongoing diplomatic efforts with both countries. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held individual calls on Wednesday with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Rubio urged both parties to work together to de-escalate tensions and pursue a “responsible solution.”
India’s Reaction: Calls for Justice and Possible Retaliation
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to hold the attackers accountable. Jaishankar told Secretary Rubio that the perpetrators must be brought to justice.
Pakistan, however, has raised alarms that a military response from India may be imminent, warning of the risks of further destabilization.

Following the attack, India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a landmark water-sharing agreement. Both nations have closed their airspace to each other’s airlines, and cross-border firing has resumed.
